“To make change, you have to be part of the conversation. You have to be sitting at the
table.” Aunty Janine Coombs, from the Country Plan

Know Your Rights

We, the Wotjobaluk, Jaadwa, Jadawadjali, Wergaia and Jupagulk Peoples have lived in the Wimmera-Mallee-Gariwerd region for thousands of years. We were given the responsibility to look after our Country and culture, to keep it healthy and strong. Our Ancestors cared for the lands and waters of our Country following Bunjil’s law and practising and protecting traditional lore and culture.

Traditional Owner Rights on Public Land

  • To enjoy the culture and identity of the WJJWJ People.
  • To maintain a distinctive spiritual, material and economic relationship with the land and the natural resources on or depending on the land.
  • To access and remain on the land.
  • To camp on the land
  • To use and enjoy the land.
  • To take natural resources on or depending on the land.
  • To conduct cultural and spiritual activities on the land.
  • To protect places and areas of importance on the land.
